  1. 1810-1849. Polish composer and pianist. He
  2. made his debut as a pianist at the age of
  3. eight. As a performer, Chopin revolutionized
  4. the technique of pianoforte-playing, and
  5. concentrated on solo piano pieces. His
  6. compositions for piano are characterized by
  7. their lyrical and poetic quality. From 1831
  8. he lived in Paris, where he became known in
  9. the fashionable salons, although he rarely
  10. performed in public. In 1836 Liszt introduced
  11. him to Mme Dudevant (George Sand), with whom
  12. he had a close relationship 1838-46. During
  13. this time she nursed him in Majorca for
  14. tuberculosis, while he composed intensively
  15. and for a time regained his health. He died
  16. 17 Oct 1849 and was buried in Pere Lachaise
  17. cemetery in Paris.
